New Orleans singer Aaron Neville had a 1960 Top 21 R&B/number 111 pop hit 'Over You' on Minit Records. By the mid-'60s, after recording some unsuccessful sides with producer/songwriter Allen Toussaint, Neville was out of the music business. A childhood friend, songwriter/producer/baritone sax player George Davis started a production company called Parlo with saxophonist Alvin Tyler and Warren Parker. Bandleader Lee Diamond brought the beginnings of a song called 'Tell It Like It Is' to Davis before returning to Little Richard's Upsetters and a side gig as a member of the King Records in-house band. Davis tapped Neville as Parlo's first signee, recording four sides at Cosimo Matassa's studio in 1965. Davis shopped the tapes to major labels and New Orleans-based labels, all of whom rejected them. Davis and his partners started Parlo Records, pressing 2,000 vinyl single copies of 'Tell It Like It Is' and marketing them through Matassa's record distributing firm. The record took off, selling a million copies while going to number one R&B for five weeks and number two pop in late 1966. The flip side was the jubilant 'Why Worry.' There was no follow-up to the gold single as Parlo folded soon after its success. Neville made an amazing comeback during the '80s, including hit duets with Linda Ronstadt, and recorded a well-received gospel album, Devotion, issued by Chordant on September 26, 2000.
